Description
During the War of 1812, Captain James Lawrence was mortally wounded aboard the USS Chesapeake while fighting the British. As the story goes, his final command was simple: “Don’t give up the ship.” Not exactly a soft exit. More of a “tell death to wait in line” kind of moment.
The phrase became a rallying cry, and shortly after, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry flew a blue battle flag with those words during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Perry went on to win the fight, proving once again that America does its best work when outnumbered, under pressure, and extremely difficult to reason with.
