On September 17th URT Clothing hosted its 11th annual URT WOMP Bodysurfing Competition to date at Coronado's North Beach. Some of you may be wondering how we got the word WOMP?? WOMP refers to the crash of the wave and the ensuing washer machine feel the body surfer feels in the impact zone.
Although the event was postponed a week because of weather, nearly 50 "human torpedoes" still showed up at Coronado's North beach's premier body surfing break. We tried our best to snag the end of last week's hurricane swell and managed to score waves 2 to 4 feet.
URT Clothing partnered with the non profit organization One More Wave Surf Corp for the event. All the proceeds from the registrations went to this amazing company who provides customized surf equipment and therapy to wounded veterans. Check them out more at https://onemorewave.com/
The WOMP started with our Squrt division (aka the kids)! These fearless chargers braved the cool water temperatures without wetsuits or complaints. At the end of the day the following leaders emerged:
1. Jack Vienna
2. Stella Frank
3. Archer Urtnowski
The ladies division was a small but mighty group, and were able to score many great waves as they competed alongside the men. Our winner, Patricia Stark made it all the way to the combined semifinals. You go girl!
1. Patricia Stark
2. Kim Tubbs
Finally, we got to see top notch performances in our men's division and the competition was tight moving into the FINAL. Our top 8 wompers battled it out, and we actually had a 4 way tie for 2nd place. We ended up having to then go by top wave scores to determine our podium:
1. Dylan Jackson
2. Brian Hall
3. Benjamin Young
Our winners scored prizes from our awesome event sponsors including Protekt, BUBS Naturals, Organifi, and Dafin. Also big thanks to our breakfast sponsor Clayton's and our coffee sponsor Heave Ho Coffee Co. We also want to thank all the generosity of our volunteers for coming out to help with event. We could not have done it without you.
Well that is a wrap and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
